The Abraspungo trek consists within the wide valley of the Mocha River, between the majestic Chimborazo volcano and the beauty of the Carihuairazo volcano. This hike crosses the north of Chimborazo to the Laguna Negra Cocha, leaving Tungurahua, Altar, and the imposing Sangay in its mountain range in sight. Therefore, this trekking has an immense variety of landscapes, since crossing the majestic extinct volcano Chimborazo we will have views from all angles. In addition, this Abraspungo hike consists of enjoying different terrains, since volcanic debris forms sandbanks, hard semi-deserts, among others, next to Carihuairazo, which gives us a drier wasteland, with a great variety of cushion-shaped plants on the bottom. of the balles, tussocks of grass on the slopes, shrubs such as the chuquiragua and stands of trees. Therefore, this route is characterized by its majestic landscapes that, in addition, rivers and streams of water abound in part of the route.
DAY 1, 2 and 3: Trek to Abraspungo
We will pick you up from the hotel of your choice at 8:00 a.m. and head south on a journey of approximately three and a half hours until we reach a small town located one hour south of Ambato, called Urbina, where we can enjoy brunch. being something light of the gastronomy of the place. At noon we will leave our belongings with our muleteers who will take care of the equipment together with the pack mules. We get ready and begin our walk gradually entering barley, onion and potato fields; This is a very typical and novel environment of the Andean highlands. From this walk we will be lucky to admire impressive views of Chimborazo and Carihuairazo. After approximately 3 hours we will walk on a bush covered wasteland and see some impressive brick red rock formations at Chimborazo, highlighted by white snow. We will make a stop for lunch here among all the nature that surrounds us and then we will prepare again to continue on our walk until we reach our first camp that is known as: ¨Rumipamba grande¨, the perfect place to enjoy the night and have dinner.
In the routine on day number 2, we will get up early and have a long-awaited breakfast since a long walk awaits us. Next, we will prepare our things and this day we will continue our walk along the trail, increasing in altitude since we will reach the highest point of the walk this day. We will make a stop at the Quebrada Gulag in which it runs with silty meltwater from the glaciers of the Chimborazo volcano, and a few kilometers ahead, ¨Gavilán Machay¨ awaits us, this site is characterized by the great flowery vegetation that surrounds it, being a place of peace and tranquility to have lunch with a frontal view of the Carihuairazo over the water. Next, we will continue our journey and with some luck the first vicuñas will appear on the way. Then our second camp will be located next to a small river. This river is safe and with calm waters, which we can choose for a refreshing bath. Once located, we will enjoy the landscape of the area, have dinner and rest for our last day.
On this last day we are going to get up, have breakfast and get ready to follow the route that descends to the south. This day we will descend gradually until we return to Urbina, on the way we will see herds of alpacas, llamas, sheep, etc. On this day we are going to have a walk on drier terrain, therefore, the landscape will change depending on the weather conditions, in addition to observing and crossing different harvest fields. This walk lasts approximately 5 hours where we will arrive at our destination (Urbina) and then return to your place of stay.
